Your cover letter should demonstrate to the reader that you are truly interested in their particular job and that you possess the relevant skills and experience. It should be clear that you have read and thought about the job advertisement carefully.

The purpose of a cover letter is to help you obtain a job interview, not tell a lengthy story. The focus should be on your interest in the position, your qualifications, and setting up an interview. Be sure to make reference to the specific job for which you are applying.

When to write a cover letter

A cover letter is usually an essential requirement when you apply for a role directly to a company.

It is generally not necessary to write a cover letter when applying for a role via a recruitment firm.

How to structure a cover letter

Structure your cover letter into four parts.

  1. Opening paragraph should tell the employer who you are and what you want
  2. Second paragraph outlines what you have to offer and emphasises any specific relevant experience or skills
  3. Third paragraph explains to the employer why you would be of value
  4. Closing paragraph clearly states when you are available for interview.

Dos and Don’ts of cover letters

Do make sure your cover letter is:

  • to the point. Clearly link your experience to the role being advertised.
  • no more than three to four paragraphs long, with a clear structure and focused intent.
  • positive and upbeat. Your aim is to interest the hiring manager enough so they read your resume.

Your cover letter should NOT:

  • be a summary or repeat of your resume.
  • be a ‘uniform’ letter that you send with all job applications.

Remember:

  • Less is more’. There is no need to write more than half a page.
  • Never handwrite a cover letter, always type and email it.
  • Ensure there are no spelling mistakes and always double check your grammar and punctuation.
  • Make sure you include the date and your contact details, including a mobile number and email address.

Example One

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing in response to your advertisement seeking a Finance Manager to run XYZ nance department.
As you will see from my enclosed/accompanying résumé, my experience and achievements are a good match for this position.

Of particular relevance is my ten years’ experience working in similar roles, speci cally where I achieved (list some of your achievements similar to what the job advert has listed is essential).
I am aware of the high value XYZ places on values and service and believe I share the same philosophy on this.

I look forward to having an opportunity to meet with you to discuss how I could contribute to your team. I am available for interview immediately.

Example Two

Dear Ms Smith,

I read with interest your advertisement seeking an advertising sales professional. I believe I possess the attributes necessary to make the role a success.

As you will see from my resume, I have a proven track record in advertising sales as well as selling to all levels of management in the tourist/hospitality/travel sector in 14 different countries including Australia.

Adept at leading a team or working as part of a team, I am also an enthusiastic self-starter able to work from home. I have initiative and loads of drive. Technical skills include telephone and face-to-face selling, Word, Outlook and Excel software pro ciency and strong communication skills.

I hope to have an opportunity to meet with you to discuss how I could contribute to your team. I am available for interview after 4pm every day.
