In this video Sean Spence, Director & Business Coach of Sean Spence & Associates and Stephen Moir share their key highlights from our recent Moir Group event.

Sean covered topics ranging from the lessons coming out of Covid, company culture and the visible impact of caring. If you care, it’s good for yourself and it’s good for the whole organisation.

Stephen Moir: Hello, I’m here with Sean Spence and we’re just reflecting on a recent event, caring as a differentiator for leaders. It was a fabulous event, Sean, what were your key takeaways?

Sean Spence: Yeah, it was really great conversation. It’s something that’s very topical at the moment after the last 18 months. Yeah stirred up a lot of thoughts but also people’s experiences of what have been going on for the last 18 months. So self-care is critical, came up very early and it’s not only necessary across the organization but in the c-suite, you know, you’re not invulnerable and looking after yourself so you can look after others is really important. The way in which caring sort of opened up conversations that hadn’t happened before, we got to know each other better or um the whole organization saying thank you for that. We need more of that, we want you more. We want to hear those communications. And that improved the level of trust. And then we talked about how this leads to concrete outcomes because, you know, innovation and creativity and simply solving problems more flexibly actually surprised some people, um some of the CEOs, but how that developed during the year. There’s also some implications for the board. How is the board watching this and enabling it rather than simply sticking to KPIs and performance parameters? This is about sustainability as well after all. And one client said that we’ve completely reframed leadership in the organization around this. But it’s also complex because some people are running multiple countries where the experience is quite different and sitting in Victoria during lockdown, it’s quite different here than it is in some other places in Australia. So how do you expand your horizon of care and listen without burning up with the load that you then might find yourself carrying? So those are quite interesting reflections and every one of them based on people’s experience of how caring has erupted as something more important for leaders.

Stephen Moir: Yeah and I think we all then agreed at the end, you know, if you care, it’s good for yourself and it’s good for the whole organization.

Sean Spence: Yeah, it’s got concrete outcomes.

Stephen Moir: Thanks Sean, that’s great
