As restrictions ease, and life slowly returns to normal (albeit a new kind of normal) post COVID-19, now is the time to really start thinking about your finance career and how to best position yourself going forward.
Moir Group recently held a series of online networking and discussion groups with senior financial professionals currently in-between roles, sharing advice and guidance on to best take control of your finance career during this time.
Some interesting insights were shared – with the realisation that many of us are in the same boat, and while there was a lot of uncertainty and fear in the beginning, more recently there has been a lot more optimism and positivity concerning to job prospects.
As COVID-19 restrictions slowly ease, there is likely to be an increase in confidence from employers and employees, and more opportunities will be out there. Now is the time to make yourself stand out from the crowd and focus on securing the best role for you.
As you search for your next role, have a think about the following:
- Reconnect with past and present contacts. Go back to more distant contacts and let people know you’re available.
- Networking is more important than ever and can mean going back to people who once worked for you and are now in new roles and organisations.
- Giving back to the community and those you had in your teams in the past, is a great way to stay positive and add value to others.
- Be prepared to take risks and try different things.
- Look at how you can be flexible with the skills you offer, both technical and commercial, and be able to demonstrate how you can apply these across roles and industries.
- There is increased competition for roles, so being positive and having clear and concise communication, both in your resume and your interview, around how you can add value now and into the future, is essential.
- Making a phone call to make sure it is worth applying for a role and then following up, after application, is a good way to get in front of the employer and recruiter.
- Allowing your personality to show through and having a connection with the culture, the team and the hiring manager, is key to you finding your ideal role and organisation.
- The now, might mean using your hands-on skills and helping the organisation prioritise and survive, and the future, is about being the entrepreneur and the thinker, and helping the organisation find their future success.
- NFP organisations are often looking for senior finance professional who offer commercial mind sets and skills, to help them grow and benefit their clients and supporters.
More than ever, now is the time to enjoy the extra family and home time as a rare opportunity and gift. Take this time to learn and enhance your skill set and to search for and secure the ideal interim or permanent role that is right for you.
